I've been working on drawing expressions a lot lately, and I'm happy to say its going pretty well! Some of these are pretty derpy, specially the 3 quarter views, but I'm happy : ) these were all inked on paper with my new and amazing micron pens mmmm <3
I decided to try cell shading one of these one morning, went alright, though its very sloppy, the edges aren't very clean durr huur.
Oooh, nice, its cool to see practice on more realistic characters than crack pages eh? and probably waaay more difficult! I really like them with all their funky-ness. Although, my only problem with them is that I find the emotions behind her a bit ambiguous. Maybe that wasn't your intention to capture the specific emotions but its always good to be able to know exactly what the character feels in that moment. The exaggerated approach on them blurs the true-ness of natural emotions? or if exaggeration was your plan, forget everything I said! Also, I love the two on the right because I can picture them in a situation but the others feel more like a generic image one would place for certain emotions? but that's my nit-picking retardation happening here! and keep doing those, its an epic exercise!
Honestly I do think that's over thinking it, after all you can be happy without JUST being happy, there's teary eyed happy, nervous happy, giddy happy, relieved happy, and so on pretty much forever! If you can't put your finger on the exact emotion, well that's in the nature of expression! Some people/character's faces are like open books, others are aloof or awkward. Its kind of sketchy. An artist could draw a character's expressions, someone comments "the expressions are dull" and the artist replies "because the character is dull". Ya know? Not that I captured any kind of personality with these, I'm basically just using Ray as a guinea pig xD
I don't really understand what you mean though, you said the expressions seem ambiguous but they're a generic form of a certain emotion...? OBJECTIONNN!!! and what not
